About Loose Diamonds

What are loose diamonds?

A loose diamond is a diamond that has been cut and polished from its initial rough form, ready to be set into an engagement ring or piece of jewellery. You can browse loose diamonds to compare their cut, colour, clarity and carat weight before choosing the perfect diamond for your jewellery. Some people buy loose diamonds for investment purposes, but most people have jewellery created to set with the diamonds they buy.

Where's the best place to buy loose diamonds?

Hatton Garden is recognised globally as one of the world’s most authoritative diamond hubs, celebrated for a long history of exquisite jewellery creation and premium diamond knowledge. Located in the heart of Hatton Garden, Queensmith is home to a team of gemmologists, experts in sourcing the finest diamonds, at the best prices. Whether you shop in store or online, each diamond Queensmith shows you has been vetted by industry experts, to ensure you never overspend on an underwhelming gem.

How should you buy loose diamonds?

You can buy loose diamonds online, or in person - either way, always make sure you have the full picture of the diamond’s characteristics, and understand how these should reflect the diamond’s price.

Brush up on your diamond knowledge to make sure you know how to find the best diamonds - our detailed Diamond Guides are designed to do just that.

You can find extensive details of a diamond’s characteristic on its IGI or GIA certificate. We don’t recommend buying from a diamond’s certificate alone - view what these characteristics look like in reality by viewing the diamond in person or viewing a 360 video of the diamond.

We typically advise looking at Excellent to Very Good cut grades (this only applies to round diamonds), D to F colour grades, and VS2 to SI1 clarity grades. This should narrow down your loose diamond selection sufficiently, to find the most beautiful diamonds at the best prices.

How much does it cost to set a loose diamond?

Any diamond you purchase from Queensmith online or in-store can be set into your ring or jewellery design by our in-house goldsmith team, for no extra cost. Choose to build your ring design online, or book an appointment to create a bespoke ring with our design consultants.

Should you find a diamond from elsewhere, or if you have heirloom diamonds you’d like resetting, we charge a fee starting from £300, which covers handling and insurance whilst the stone is in our care. The cost of your desired design will be added to this, with engagement ring settings starting from £700. Get in touch to learn more.
