Diamonds are unlike any other gemstone. When cut correctly, they reflect white light at the perfect angle to create a brilliance that is truly unique. Breathtakingly beautiful diamonds are an automatic choice for the most exquisite engagement rings, wedding rings, necklaces and earrings. The scintillating sparkle and natural fire of diamonds makes them so desirable, however, their uniqueness extends way beyond beauty.

They are so highly prized because of their rarity. Formed naturally in the bowels of the Earth under incredible pressure and temperatures and over three billion years old, diamond is virtually pure carbon. Its unique crystal structure also makes it out planet's hardest mineral.

Diamonds are carried to the Earth's surface by rare geological events. Even then, hundreds of tones of rock have to be mined and processed in order to unearth one 'gem quality' diamond. Despite this rarity, Hearts of London readily rejects any diamond that falls short of our own exceptionally high standards.

Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat Weight are the most important diamond characteristics and are often referred to as the 4C's. Diamonds carried by Hearts of London are precisely cut, symmetrical, perfectly polished, independently graded and guaranteed conflict free. They are amongst the finest available.

Cut defines the beauty of a diamond and relates to its surface facets. While many jewellers choose cuts that maximise size, Hearts of London places beauty first and clients are therefore reassured that all of our diamonds have been cut to maximise their natural brilliance rather than their dimensions.

When you purchase from Hearts of London, you are assured of quality certified stones, the highest grade cuts and the most breathtaking diamonds. We never sell diamonds with ‘poor’ or ‘fair’ cut grades.

Colour is widely acknowledged as the second most important characteristic and refers to the yellow tint running through most diamonds. This tint is caused by the presence of trace nitrogen atoms trapped within the stones atomic structure. Colour can greatly affect the price of a diamond and those with the least colour will attain the highest grades. Although the difference in colour between two diamonds may appear negligible, their values can differ dramatically.

Clarity is the measure of a diamonds imperfections. Stones with the least inclusions or blemishes will usually command the highest clarity grades and prices. Only very rare diamonds are classed as being flawless with no imperfections. Most imperfections are however invisible to the naked eye and we therefore often advise clients not to become too preoccupied with clarity.

Carat measures a diamonds weight. One carat weighs 200 milligrams or one fifth of a gram, and a half-carat diamond may be referred to as a 0.50ct or 50 point carat stone. Larger diamonds are much more rare than small ones and if all the other characteristics are equal, the value of a one-carat diamond will usually be significantly more than double that of a half-carat stone. Significant savings can also be made when selecting diamonds that are slightly less than one or half of one carat.
